1. Preparation

  • Preparation is the key to a successful interview
  • Know the exact time and place of the interview, who is interviewing you, the pronunciation of their name and their correct title.
  • Ensure you know how to get there and do a practice run if necessary, make sure you factor in variables such as traffic and public transport inconsistencies.
  • Learn pertinent facts about the company such as annual sales revenue, principal lines of business and locations
  • Ensure the opportunity fits into your career goals. If you are not really interested in the role this will show and the interview is wasted time for both you and the interviewer. If you need more information confirm what you require and ask your representing consultant prior to interview.
  • An interview is a "two-way street." Prepare questions to ask during the interview. Insightful questions help both of you determine if your relationship will be mutually rewarding. Select questions allow you to find out more about the role rather than salary or rewards eg: Could you give me a breakdown of a typical day within this role? The better you understand the opportunity, the more you will be able to communicate your interest in the position.
  • Honestly assess your employment background and develop explanations for any weak points. Prepare a list of tough questions that may be asked, then develop answers to those questions.
  • Put your best foot forward. Always wear proper attire if you are not sure stick with a smart business suit. If wearing fragrances ensure they are light

2. The interview

  • Arrive no earlier than 15 mins before the set time, but no later than five minutes prior to interview
  • If you are asked to complete an application, fill out the form in full leaving no blanks if current salary required - be truthful, if salary range is requested write – negotiable.
  • Shake hands firmly and maintain eye contact with the interviewer/s
  • Be yourself, confidence and self respect are important
  • A lot of interviewers look for the STAR response to questions basing future behaviour on past performance eg: What is your experience with database development specifically in Oracle? – make sure you structure your answer, the following is an example of this approach;
  • Situation – The most recent experience I have with Oracle development is in my current position at ABC Co I have also used Oracle for over 10 years at SS and Bro's, Mark's, and LTC.
  • Task - Within my current role I was responsible for developing Oracle during the following projects ………………., using these technologies.
  • Action – I was the sole developer for this project and completed it within time frames allocated.
  • Response – I received a commendation for this project and have been target to complete all future projects in this area.
  • Remember “be yourself” as both you and the interviewer need to determine if this is the right match.

3. Closing the interview

  • If you are interested in the position let the interviewer know eg: I am impressed with what I have seen here today and would be interested in joining your team.
  • Ask the Interviewer what's the next stage in the interview process and the likely timeframes?
  • Thank the interviewer for his or her time and consideration.

4. Follow up

  • Contact your Recruitment Consultant after the interview this allows you to talk about how you felt whilst things are still fresh. It also gives you the opportunity to cover off any queries that you have. Again make sure that you are honest in your feedback.
